Huggy Bears

April 19th, 2010 Posted in The Art of Parenting

I’m not in favor of making my kids hug their relatives, some of whom I wouldn’t hug either. But I am in favor, when they have been fighting, of making them hug each other. Wife or I or both of us make them grab hold of the brother they’ve been mean to, and not let go until we get smiles.

It’s hard to keep your arms wrapped around someone and not feel your heart warmed toward him. Try it. But start with someone you know. Strangers don’t always respond well.

Chris still hugs his friends goodbye when they’ve been over to play – and sometimes hello when they arrive if he’s particularly excited. It’s completely spontaneous, perfect and beautiful. Hugs are for boys, and that makes me happy.
