Millstones

June 3rd, 2010 Posted in The Art of Parenting

Yet another way we increasingly fail children in our supersized, high-fructose corn syrup besotted, electronics-enslaved, why-walk-when-I-can-ride culture: fat kids.

“At the core of the problem is the fact that less than one third of all children ages 6 to 17 get regular vigorous exercise, defined as at least 20 minutes of physical activity that makes them sweat and breathe hard, according to a new joint report from the American Heart Association and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.”

I’m not sure what to make of a world in which a ten year-old can’t find an hour to run and play, but I have a feeling there’s something very wrong with it.

When I was in Air Force Tech School we had an instructor who allowed us, when an answer to one of his questions was quite obvious, to simply say “Duh!” in place of providing the actual answer. So, in response to your last sentence:

    Duh!

I’m not sure what to make of a blogger who takes the National Association for Sport and Physical Education poll results calling for more funding for sports and physical education at face value. Is there the slightest chance they would present honest data?

Breaking news: the National Music Education Association poll results highlight the demand for more funding for music education!

The National Basket Weaving Instructors Association poll results call for an immediate infusion of federal funds for basket weaving, or your kids will mainline heroin!

My son worked up a sweat and was breathing hard after an hour of chasing fireflies in our backyard. Remember when childhood ‘exercise’ was fun, free, and not supervised by parents? My only job was to hold the tupperware container for firefly deposits and to yell out ‘don’t squish them’ every once in a while. And they were outside until 9:30 PM. Egads!!!
