Our Neighbor
Charles Dickens wrote of children: "I love these little people; and it is not a slight thing, when they, who are so fresh from God, love us." Fred Rogers was loved by millions of children, and his life was no slight thing. He has left us today, and the world is much poorer for it.
I suppose one day I will have to tell my son, who watches tapes of Mr. Rogers with a gaze of adoration that few others receive so freely. But not soon. Mr. Rogers is still very much alive to my son, who believes him when he says in a hundred little ways: "God loves you, and so do I."
We love you too Mr. Rogers. Rejoice in your reward.

Working at a college campus, I frequent cafeteria for lunch for the price as well as the food (which is good, actually). There is a microphone available for students to make general announcements, and I was genuinely suprised and touched when a young woman approached the stand and asked everyone for a moment of silence in honor of Mr. Rogers. I complied, and ask each of you to do so in your own fashion. If you can find that place in your heart where as a kid, you knew the comfort and fun of seeing this man everyday, you'll comply with my request. Otherwise, a toast in his memory would be in order, although I'm sure it would consist of milk, with a side of cookies.
Thank you, sir, for being one of the first bright points in my life.
